East Bluff Trail, Devil’s Lake

Day 1 Hikes

East Bluff: This gorgeous hike ascends and then follows the lake’s eastern cliffs, offering stunning vistas of Devil’s Lake 500 feet below. 1.7 miles; about 1.5 hours

Devil’s Doorway: This easy, level asphalt trail provides magnificent vistas as it follow the top of the East Bluff. A side trail takes us down to great views of the Devil’s Doorway rock formation. 0.5 mile; about 30 minutes

Balanced Rock: This south-facing trail offers a unique hike, as it follows a rather steep trail of large stones. We may be fortunate enough to see rock climbers along some of the cliff walls. 0.4 mile; about 45 minutes

Tumbled Rocks: This beautiful paved, easy trail hugs the western shores of Devil’s Lake as it winds through huge boulders of red, purple, and pink quartzite. 1 mile; about 45 minutes

Including connector trails, we’ll hike 5 miles.

Day 1 Dinner: We’ll enjoy dinner at The River’s Edge, whose great food has made it a local favorite. It also brings the outdoors inside: A 100-year-old oak tree grows through the restaurant and fish swim in a 4,000-gallon aquarium.

Day 1 Beach Bonfire: Share s’mores and laughter over a crackling fire on the beach in front of our hotel, under the almost-full hunter’s moon.

Day 2

Wednesday AM "on-your-own option":

  • Relax on the beach, your balcony, or at Sunset Bay’s indoor pool.
  • Kayak on Mirror Lake: Leader’s pick! Kayak along sandstone bluffs and crimson maples at this gorgeous Wisconsin gem! Then opt for a short walk in this pristine park. Begin at 9 am; 10 minutes from lodge. Per-hour rates of $11 (single) or $15 (double). www.mirrorlakewisconsin.com
  • Ride horseback: Enjoy a guided 40-minute trail ride through the woods and along the rim of Lost Canyon. Watch for the abundant deer, wild turkey, woodchucks, and other wildlife. Opens at 9 am; 5 minutes from lodge. $22/adult. www.dells.com/horses
  • Watch cranes from around the world: View more than 100 cranes, including the only complete collection of all 15 species, at the International Crane Foundation’s Baraboo headquarters. In addition to these exotic birds, you’ll enjoy the peaceful interpretive nature trails that wind through 100 acres of restored prairie, wetlands, and oak savanna.   • Challenge yourself at the Kalahari Indoor Theme Park: Great option for inclement weather! Try the ropes course or rock-climbing walls, play laser tag, or ride the 6-story Ferris wheel. Enjoy 24 lanes of bowling, two high-def golf simulators, elevated go carts, mini golf, and arcade games. FREE with your stay at Sunset Bay.   • Dells boat tour: Enjoy a 2-hour Dells Boat Tour through sandstone cliffs and amazing rock formations. You can take short hikes to Witches Gulch canyon and a unique rock formation called Stand Rock. The boat’s open-top deck and enclosed cabin make it suitable in all weather.   • Visit the Big Cat Rescue and Education Center: This center provides a safe, comfortable home for abused and unwanted big cats (lions, leopards, tigers) and educates the public Opens at 10 am; 20 minutes from lodge. $9/adults; $7/seniors. www.wisconsinbigcats.org

Final hike: Parfrey’s Glen This level hike in the morning will help us stretch our leg muscles a bit. The trail takes us across the gurgling creek and into a deep gorge that ends with a small, delicate waterfall. Approx. hiking distance and time: 1.4 miles and 1 hour.
